Good deals start with good habits.
A few simple tips to help you connect with neighbors and trade with confidence. Updated 2026-10-15.
Take your time, ask questions, and choose arrangements that work for you. A little preparation helps make the exchange easier for everyone.
Choose a comfortable place to meet
Pick a convenient, well-lit public spot, ideally during the day. Bring a friend if you like and let someone know your plans. For higher-value items, a bank or designated exchange area may be a good choice—just check availability beforehand. You can always reschedule or walk away if you feel uncomfortable.
Picking up furniture or viewing a property? Agree on a time, have someone with you when possible, and plan transport or lifting help. For an inter-island purchase, confirm ferry schedules and pickup details together. Give yourself enough time to look things over before deciding.
Take a look and agree on the details
Test electronics and appliances, check model and serial numbers, and ask about damage, repairs, missing parts, and warranties. Check recalls before buying or selling, especially children’s products. Do not buy or sell recalled or unsafe items simply because they are used or free.
For vehicles and boats, compare identification numbers with ownership documents, check liens and transfer requirements, and consider an independent mechanic or marine surveyor. Arrange safe, insured test drives or sea trials. Confirm ownership using the appropriate records rather than relying only on photos of documents.
Write down what you are buying, the condition, price, included accessories, payment, delivery, and any return or warranty agreement. You and the other person arrange the transaction directly, so inspections and payment decisions are yours. Johny’s List does not provide escrow, transaction insurance, or guaranteed refunds. Featured listings are paid promotions, rather than endorsements.
Housing, jobs, and services
Visit a rental or arrange a viewing with someone you trust before paying. Independently confirm the owner or authorized agent, the property address, lease terms, and any licensing. Copied photos and real addresses can appear in fake listings. Be wary of someone who cannot show the property but demands a deposit to reserve it.
Check an employer using independently located contact information. Do not pay to unlock a job, deposit a check to buy equipment for a stranger, or accept work moving money through your account. Share tax or banking details only after confirming a legitimate hiring process through a secure channel.
For contractors and professional services, confirm licensing where required, references, scope, milestones, insurance where relevant, and a written agreement. Reject unlawful discriminatory screening and report discriminatory listings. For animal listings, verify welfare, seller authority, records, and transport requirements before making arrangements.
Share only what you need to
Open johnyslist.com directly when a message asks you to sign in, reset a password, or pay. Examine the destination before following a link. Our support team will not ask you to email your password or one-time sign-in code. Avoid unexpected attachments and requests to install software or allow remote access.
Use a unique password and secure the email or Google account you use to sign in. Keep identity documents, bank details, home access codes, and sensitive information out of listings and messages. Review photos for visible addresses, documents, faces, and other private details.
Choosing to hide your listing email uses a Johny’s List relay address. The relay masks both participants’ email addresses, but text, signatures, quoted messages, or information you voluntarily share may identify you. Relay attachments are omitted. In-app messages and relayed emails are not end-to-end encrypted. Message notifications can display the message in your email inbox.
Keep payments simple
Be cautious of a buyer who overpays and asks you to send the difference to a courier or another person. A check can appear available before a bank discovers it is fraudulent. Verify payment inside your own bank or payment app; screenshots and payment emails can be fabricated.
Do not pay a stranger with gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or a supposed account-upgrade fee to receive money. Never share a one-time login or verification code. Avoid deposits for unseen items and pressure to use an unfamiliar escrow, delivery, vehicle-history, or payment site.
Trading across islands can work well; take a little extra time to verify shipping and payment arrangements, especially if an offer feels rushed or unusually cheap. Independently check shipping services and costs. Johny’s List does not appoint delivery agents or send purchase-protection invoices for member transactions. Optional listing boosts are platform advertising services, not escrow or insurance.
You’re in control of the conversation
For a listing, sign in and select Report on its detail page. For in-app harassment or scams, open the conversation and use Report user; choose the closest reason and provide relevant details. Use Block to stop further in-app messages between those accounts. Blocking is not an emergency response and cannot stop contact through another service or a new account.
Sellers can manage and block individual email inquiries from their profile’s Email inquiries section. For other unwanted relay emails, contact support@johnyslist.com with the inquiry reference or listing link. For direct email or phone harassment, also use your email provider’s or phone’s blocking and reporting tools.
Report threats, intimidation, sexual harassment, unwanted explicit messages, hate, impersonation, doxxing, blackmail, fraud, and spam. If someone posts your private information, send support the exact URL and explain what should be removed. You can use our Contact page if you cannot sign in. Do not retaliate or publish the other person’s personal details.
Keep relevant URLs, usernames, timestamps, receipts, and messages; email headers may help investigate spoofing. Do not download, forward, or upload illegal sexual material involving minors. Report the location of such material rather than sending copies. We may act on reports, but cannot promise immediate review, identify every offender, recover money, or remove copies outside our site.
If you need a little extra help
If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911 or the local emergency service. Leave an unsafe situation and contact local police for threats or a crime. Do not wait for a marketplace report to be reviewed.
If you sent money to a scammer, contact your bank or payment provider promptly and ask whether the transfer can be stopped or reversed. Preserve transaction references and report the account. Recovery is not guaranteed. If credentials were exposed, change them through the genuine service and secure the associated email account.
Use the official resources below for fraud reports, identity-theft recovery, product recalls, and exchange-location guidance. These organizations operate independently; a report to them does not also notify Johny’s List. Send us a separate report so we can review the account or listing.
